New Year’s Resolutions:
Change Your Perception
With
the New Year comes the inevitable New Year’s Resolution. By far, the most
popular resolutions revolve around health. Interestingly enough, the USA.gov
website lists both “Get Fit” and “Lose Weight” under
Popular
Resolutions.
Yet,
it is staggering how many resolutions go, well, unresolved. During new client
interviews, it is not uncommon for the client to mention that their current
fitness goal was their resolution last year.
One
of the key ingredients in training that I provide through Control Fitness is an
environment, which clients feel and believe they are capable of achieving their
resolutions.
In
regards to resolutions, what I find is that unresolved resolutions go deeper
than just commitment. The issue rests in perceptions held regarding
resolutions. Here are a couple of points anyone can implement
to avoid the same resolution next year. |

Resolutions
were made to be broken?
First,
change your perception of the New Year’s Resolution. Unfortunately, resolutions
have morphed into goals that are permissible to give-up after January 31st–they
are made to be broken.
Instead,
if it is something that holds meaning, like regaining a healthy body weight, do
not call it a resolution.
Have
fun with the name. A goal of “Lose 20 lbs” could be “John’s plan to fit back
into old clothes and regain half his wardrobe. |

Life-Changes are a Positive!
Whatever
the goal or change you wish to make, view it as a positive change.
It
is difficult to succeed with something if you hate it. But, if you continually
view your goal (i.e. resolution) as a positive and a thing to enjoy
accomplishing, you will be more apt to follow-through. When you are at the gym, be happy that you are
taking control and making a positive change to your health–no matter how much
you are sweating and hating the cardio machine. |

| Believe you are Capable...
Further,
change your perception of what you can and can’t do. Losing 10, 20, or even 100
lbs is difficult–but not insurmountable. It all starts the same way; 1 pound at
a time. However, it will never happen if you believe you cannot do it.
Be in Control of your Life
So,
how do you achieve completing a New Year’s Resolution? Simple, do not change
because it is a resolution. Change because it is your life.
Whatever
the goal, if it is positive and holds meaning, you owe it to yourself to take
control and be successful.
